Amid these rising figures, the experts at Autism Parenting Magazine have shared five common behavioural signs of autism, especially among children, that parents should pay attention to.

#1 Challenges in social interactions

Challenges in understanding social cues, limited eye contact, and difficulty engaging with peers, such as a lack of shared interests or difficulties in responding, can be an indicator of needing evaluation.

#2 Communication barriers

Children who display signs of a delay in communication can demonstrate this through a range of behaviours in early childhood. If a child has difficulty with spoken language or listener responding, this may be an indicator that an evaluation is needed.

#3 Routines or restricted interests

If a child insists on routines or has difficulty straying from routines, or engages in repetitive behaviours or displays restricted interests, intensely enough that it affects their ability to learn or engage, parents may wish to consider seeking professional advice.

#4 Sensory sensitivities

Children may be highly sensitive to certain sensory experiences, such as sounds, textures, or lights, while others may actively seek these out. Some children may also demonstrate a lack of sense of danger or reaction when experiencing certain sensory input, and these responses can indicate a need for evaluation.

#5 Developmental delays

Some children may experience delays in speech, motor skills, or cognitive development. If a child is not meeting milestones in their development, it is important that parents seek professional guidance.

Mark Blakey, CEO of Autism Parenting Magazine, commented, “Rising figures can be attributed to a better understanding of the autism spectrum. A diagnosis can be validating for individuals and open up access to the best support. Knowing the signs of autism is key to recognising the possibility of an individual having autism, and spurring them, or parents of children, to seek evaluation from a professional.

“For those who have autism but have yet to be diagnosed, the signs can appear in ways such as social withdrawal or anxiety, in addition to the signs listed.

“Recognising these signs early in a child’s life helps to ensure a child has access to the right support to promote their growth and development.”
