City of Derry airport is flying high in table of fastest-growing airports

The Eglinton transport facility recently welcomed a new Airport Manager, Mr Steve Frazer, marking the start of a new chapter

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) named City of Derry Airport as the third fastest-growing airport in the UK in 2019, with an increase of 9.7% in passenger numbers – an amazing feat given the challenging times in the UK aviation industry.

Uncertainty surrounding Brexit over the last few years has caused some fear in booking travel, and the effects of this are demonstrated by the decline and even demise of many regional airlines.

The news of increased passenger numbers at City of Derry Airport comes as it recently welcomed a new Airport Manager, Mr Steve Frazer, marking the start of a new chapter at the Eglinton transport facility.

Moving from his previous position as Director of Engineering and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Gulf Helicopters in Qatar, the new incumbent carries over 30 years’ experience in the aviation industry at British Airways and Harrods Aviation.

Mr Frazer has noted that he sees fantastic opportunity and potential for growth at City of Derry Airport.

In terms of passenger growth last year, City of Derry Airport was topped only by London Southend Airport, which gained a 37.5% passenger increase, and Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which achieved a 15.2% increase, in an analysis carried out on all UK airports.

The growth of London Southend Airport is also excellent news for City of Derry Airport, as the Scottish airline, Loganair, launched a direct service between the two airports in October 2019, providing passengers with a fast, efficient airport journey at both sides (less than 10 minutes check-in and security time at both airports) and regular onward travel options. Loganair provide a direct service from City of Derry Airport to London Southend twice daily from Sunday-Friday and once on a Saturday, with fares available from just £39.99 per person, one way....

Loganair’s all-inclusive fare system allows 15kg baggage and 6kg hand luggage to fly for free, the provision of complementary in-flight refreshments and 33% discount on child fares.

Loganair offer great benefits for business travellers with their Fly Flex scheme, which allows you to hop an earlier flight should you need to, on the day of travel at no extra cost, and the Clan Loganair rewards programme then allows you to build points each time you fly, which you can use towards a free flight of choice.

It’s worth noting that Loganair also offer direct flights from City of Derry Airport to Manchester and Glasgow, with interline connections available to Dubai, Australia and America from these two airports, while Ryanair additionally provide direct services to Edinburgh and Liverpool throughout the week, with fares starting from just £9.99pp one way.
