Motivated by her role as a breastfeeding peer supporter and her own breastfeeding journey during lockdown, Ruth wanted to find a way to help women continue to breastfeed during the uncertainty of a pandemic.

Belfast-based mum Ruth Maguire, Founder of Boobingit explained: “Breastfeeding can be daunting and overwhelming to get to grips with at the best of times, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, things have been made harder.

“My first breastfeeding journey was four years ago and I received lots of face-to-face support when I was struggling.

“Feeding my second child during lockdown was a totally different and more lonely journey, but I at least had experience on my side to help me get through.

“As a breastfeeding peer supporter, my heart breaks for new mums who are struggling and missing out on face-to-face support. Breastfeeding rates in the UK are already one of the lowest in the world, and now it looks as though these figures will dip further.”

According to research by Brown & Shenker (2020) around 82% of women who felt that lockdown had a negative impact on their experience, stopped breastfeeding, typically before they were ready, blaming it on lack of face-to-face support.

Ruth continued: “As new parents get to grips with the ‘new normal’, the online breastfeeding community is as important as ever. It’s my hope that boobingit.com goes some way to helping mums feel supported and empowered to breastfeed during these challenging times.”

Boobingit is an online destination for all things breastfeeding. Founded in 2020 the website brings together up-to-the-minute breastfeeding information, motivational mama stories and light-hearted updates too. Visit boobingit.com and follow @boobingit for the latest updates.
