A GoFundMe organised by Matthew Brown says: ‘On Sunday 20th April Jay Millar, known to thousands as "Jay the Barber" took unwell, suffering from a seizure which resulted in a fall, hitting his head and being admitted to ICU where he was put into a medically induced coma.

‘Jay is well known to the community in Belfast and beyond for all of the work he has done.

‘With the homeless, in hospitals, with those in care, children's homes and hospices.

‘He is a man who has never stopped giving and has never asked for anything in return.

‘Now I ask for us to help out his family in their hour of need.

‘With two businesses and a family to support, Jay will have a severely reduced fine whilst he is in hospital and in recovery, meanwhile his family will still have personal and business bills to cover.

And the public have answered with their hearts raising more than £12k so far.

‘Jay the Barber’, runs a business in north Belfast and it went viral on TikTok after giving haircuts to the homeless in 2023.

He previously shared his experience of growing up in the care system to mark Care Day.

A later update from the organiser said: ‘We just want to give a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to the Go Fund Me page so far.

‘The original target of £2000 was hit within a matter of hours. We are about to hit £8000 and I have increased the target to £10000.

‘When I told Orla about the page and the donations she was embarrassed as she certainly didn't expect anything!

‘But we know how these things go. All focus is on Jay getting better but it doesn't stop bills from getting in the way so it's just one less thing to worry about.

‘Jay takes every Tuesday and Wednesday off work because these were the least busiest day in the shop.

‘Days to rest and recover after long days cutting hair followed by long nights teaching you would think.

‘But that's not what happens. Jay gets so many messages and requests to do house calls for those who are housebound, attend hospices, hospitals, care homes, community centres, schools or youth clubs to either provide haircuts or give talks.

‘And he never takes a penny. I'd like to think of that as Jay paying it forward and this is our way of paying it back

‘We will provide an update on Jay later this week.

‘Thank you for all of your kind messages and prayers. They're amazing’.
