Signs that you’re ready to make the switch to an electric car

There’s no denying that electric vehicles on Britain’s roads are becoming an increasingly common sight - the SMMT’s latest figures show that new battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations are up 28.6% so far in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
The choice of EVs continues to grow and the technology is improving every year, but plenty of British drivers are still hesitant to make the switch. If you’re beginning to question your allegiance to petrol or diesel, however, there could be signs that you’re ready to make the change.
1. You’re thinking more and more about fuel prices
With petrol prices rising and fears of it staying that way for some time, you may have already been considering that an EV could be a good solution.
Of course, there’s a lot to consider regarding electricity rates and current fuel prices, as well as mileage and where exactly you’re charging. However, by and large, an EV makes driving costs far more predictable, especially if you have the convenience of charging at home overnight.
2. You have a very regular schedule
If you rarely make longer road trips, but instead have a car for a short commute, school drop-offs, and shopping, then you’ll quickly find that an EV fits your schedule perfectly.
You may find that range is less of a concern with an overnight charge, while there are also plenty of charging points dotted around major towns and cities in the UK. Plus, modern EV dashboards can give you a clear indication of how far you can drive after the battery has been charged.
3. You can see there’s more choice than ever
You may have had a quick browse at EVs a few years ago and decided there simply wasn’t the right one for you. The number of different EVs on the market has skyrocketed, and now everything from smaller, zippier city cars to spacious family SUVs are available.
For larger family cars, especially, the smart #5 electric SUV is one strong example. Its fast charging and large battery capacity make it useful for town or city life, but the 366-mile range from one charge also helps its case for road trips around the UK.
4. You want a new car to be a real upgrade
A new car should be exciting, but so often we just move sideways with our car selection, rather than up. If you want something genuinely interesting and new to drive, then EVs will tick the box.
The technology, roomier interiors and different driving experience can all make an EV feel like a genuine upgrade before we even consider the financial and environmental benefits.
5. Life won’t be that different without a petrol or diesel engine
The shift to an electric car shouldn’t feel so dramatic. You have your five seats, large boot space, entertainment, climate control, driver assistance tech, and so on. The biggest adjustment is getting used to charging differently rather than filling up at a petrol station.
The point is that you don’t have to turn your life upside-down to go electric. Once charging becomes part of your routine, it can feel completely normal.
With petrol and diesel accounting for a shrinking share of new car registrations, it’s becoming harder to ignore the electric alternative. The SMMT figures show that hundreds of thousands of Brits are making the switch to an EV each year.
Going electric won't be the right choice for everyone, but if the signs all point towards an EV, it could be time to give one a closer look.
