Posting an image of the damage on their Facebook page Police Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon said; “This is the damage caused by a crashed car, which was driven into the wall of a local Primary School overnight. The driver was arrested nearby with the assistance of a police dog.

“The driver is now facing prosecution for several offences.”

While police did not elaborate on the offences they did conclude their post with the message; “Never ever drink and drive!”

Local DUP Councillor Margaret Tinsley expressed her shock at the incident and said: “I am just back from seeing the damage that was caused to the gates of Edenderry Primary School last night by a reckless drunk driver.

“I was chatting to a number of local residents who were relieved to hear the guilty culprit was arrested by the police.

“When you survey the damage it is very clear the car was travelling at excessive speed, this could have been a child and not a wall! It doesn’t bear thinking about, but what is it going to take for people to realise, they should never drink and drive, and that means everyone.

“I have asked our local MP and MLA to contact the board to get the area secured ASAP.”
