Investigation launched after ‘senseless and cruel murder’ of ‘family man’ in his home - PSNI appeal for information

A man was shot dead last night in west Belfast.

It happened at a house in Lenadoon Avenue around 10pm.

According to reports the victim was a man in his 50s and members of his family were in the house at the time.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the attack despite the best efforts of paramedics to save his life.

PSNI Det Ch Insp Michelle Shaw said: "Our enquiries are at any early stage. However, I would appeal to anyone with information, or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around that time, to contact us."

There were no further details provided about the victim.

Belfast West MP Paul Maskey tweeted: "Local people are angry this attack has been carried out when the community & emergency services are facing the Covid-19 pandemic".

Mr Maskey added his "thoughts are with the man's family".

SDLP West Belfast Councillor Brian Heading condemned the murder of a man in Lenadoon last night.

He said: “Those responsible for this senseless and cruel murder are thugs who need to get their foot off the neck of the community in West Belfast.

“They weren’t wanted in the past and they aren’t wanted now, particularly when our emergency services are working so hard to protect people from the impact of Covid-19.

“The local community is in shock this morning. Those responsible need to be caught a face justice for what they’ve done.

“I would encourage anyone with information to bring it to the PSNI.”
