A PSNI spokesperson said: “He was noted to have sustained a number of wounds, and due to an ongoing concern for his safety and that of a number of members of the public gathered nearby, officers discharged one attenuating energy projectile.”

Such projectiles are less-lethal baton round alternatives to bullets.

Added the spokesperson: “The man, aged 31, was brought to safety and arrested on suspicion of offences including non-fatal strangulation, possession of an offensive weapon with intent, threats to kill and false imprisonment.

“He remains in custody at this time while enquiries continue.

“As is normal procedure, the Office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed.”
