Connor McCarte, 43, with an address listed as Gortaheran Crescent, Portglenone, is also charged with possession of what is described on a charge sheet as suspected methamphetamine.

He is further charged with harassment of the female between October 27 last year and February 24 this year.

Full details to the background to the charges were not outlined at the hearing today at Antrim Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ballymena.

At an earlier hearing, a police officer did not object to the defendant being bailed with conditions.

The officer had said there was an incident at 2am when the defendant was "allegedly under the influence of drugs" and "there was a meat cleaver involved".

At the earlier court the defendant had been given bail in the sum of £500 to an address in Ballymena on condition that he was not to enter a part of Portglenone, was not to have any contact with two named people, that he was electronically tagged, and he was not to be under the influence of alcohol.

At court today the case was adjourned to June 9 to fix a date for a contest.
