North Coast: 560 speeding detections and 54 drink seizures and nine arrests over Easter weekend, say police

Nine people were arrested, while 560 were detected speeding and alcohol seized 54 times over the North Coast’s Easter weekend, police have said.

With some sunny days over the extended weekend, the PSNI ran what officers described as an “extensive safety operation”, tackling anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving, traffic disruption, noise and illegal car modifications as people came to the area’s sandy shores.

Over the course of the Easter holiday, nine people were arrested for offences ranging from disorderly behaviour and excess alcohol to possession of an offensive weapon.

Said Causeway Coast and Glens Superintendent, Yvonne McManus: “We also had fifty-four alcohol seizures in the area.

“There were also 34 endorsable tickets and 179 non-endorsable tickets issued to road users.

“This was a very busy period for everyone involved. We do recognise that some disruption was caused during this time, and we thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding.”

The operation, added the superintendent, came about after area residents and businesses raised concerns, and a public meeting will be held to address those issues further.

Road safety patrols seized 21 vehicles for being in a dangerous condition, while 24 drivers were hit with fines for defects.

Safety camera vans deployed along the coast detected 560 speeders, she added.

Stated the superintendent: “We will now take time to review the weekend’s policing operation and continue our engagement with partner agencies, residents and local businesses.

“This will help us inform planning and implement other measures that we can potentially use for future busy holiday periods in the North Coast. We want the area to be a safe space that everyone can enjoy peacefully and safely.”
