Woman aged 71 admits to being over drink-drive limit when she crashed car into Co Antrim shop and trapped customer

A 71-year-old woman was more than twice the drink drive limit when a vehicle smashed into the Grove Road Spar shop in Ballymena.

Marion Connolly, of Carnwood Hall in Ballymena, was at the town's magistrates' court today and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol in breath in relation to 7pm on October 17 this year.

A prosecutor said the defendant "drove through the window" of the shop.

The court was told the defendant had an alcohol in breath reading of 94. The legal limit is 35.

The full details have yet to be outlined, and district judge Nigel Broderick said he would look at footage of the incident when sentencing the defendant.

She was given an interim driving ban, and the case was adjourned to December 18 for a pre-sentence report.

In a press release in October, police said: "We received a report at around 7pm on Friday, October 17, of a vehicle crashing into a shop.

"Officers attended, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

"A customer who was trapped in the store as a result of the collision was freed and received medical attention at the scene, before being taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

“There was also significant damage caused to the front of the store, with a window smashed, along with damage inside. Officers subsequently arrested a 71-year-old woman".
