The party this evening blamed the Assembly Commission, which has jurisdiction over Stormont property and staff.

It is chaired by Alex Maskey of SF, and has a member each on it from the SDLP, SF, Alliance, UUP and DUP.

The TUV said the victims’ event is “the largest annual event held in the building”, and that last year, Parliament Buildings were illuminated red for the occasion.

Party leader Jim Allister said the gathering is set for 7pm on Friday, adding: “I find it quite shocking that the Assembly Commission cannot find it within itself to permit such a small but important token of respect for innocent victims...

“I would stress that the event is going ahead on Friday and I have no doubt that, as was the case in other years, it will prove to be worthwhile.”
