A new poll has shown that Britons feel the American former actress is the royal woman most people can relate to.

Former Suits star Ms Markle, who will wed Prince Harry in May, came second overall with 29% of votes, while Harry came first with 32%, making him the most relatable royal.

The Duchess of Cambridge came fifth on 13%, with 49% believing she had become less relatable since marrying the Duke of Cambridge and been moulded into someone else since her wedding.

Princess Beatrice - the Duke of York's daughter - came third with 15%. The Duke of Edinburgh also scored 15%.

Only 4% felt they could relate to the Queen.

Nearly a third (31%) of those who could relate to Ms Markle said it was because she was an actress in the public eye before her engagement to Harry, while 14% said it was because she was down to earth and 11% because she was a feminist.

But 72% admitted they would not like to see Harry and his new bride as King and Queen, with 61% believing such a role would change them too much.

Asked about their views on the monarchy, of the 2,300 people interviewed, 27% said the royal family was great for tourism, 26% said they loved the royals, 20% were not entirely sure what the royal family did and 14% felt the monarchy was an outdated institution.

George Charles, of VoucherCodesPro.co.uk which carried out the survey, said: "Whether you know what the monarchy do and whether you love them or not, you can't deny that they're a huge attraction in the UK for foreign visitors.

"And I bet most people confess that they'll find themselves glued to the TV when there's a royal wedding or something similar.

"Love or hate them, we're all a little bit obsessed with them, even if it's a guilty pleasure of ours."

2,311 Britons aged 18 and over were questioned about their thoughts on the monarchy.
