Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission's transgender self-ID call 'out of touch with reality'

The TUV has reacted strongly to the push for transgender self-ID by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission.

Its deputy leader councillor Ron McDowell said that “this approach is completely out of touch with both biological reality and the legal protections that citizens are entitled to expect”.

He went on to add: “The UK Supreme Court has affirmed that sex is a biological reality, not a matter of subjective declaration.

"Any attempt to suggest otherwise opens the door to serious and far-reaching consequences for women’s sport, single-sex spaces, and safeguarding in healthcare, schools, prisons and beyond.

“It is striking that the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission has chosen to advocate for self-ID at precisely the moment when legal clarity from the highest court has pointed in the opposite direction, and when the UK government has rightly shelved such proposals.

“It is equally telling that the commission is pressing this agenda while simultaneously arguing that the implications of the Supreme Court judgment are unclear in Northern Ireland because of the Windsor Framework.

"That contradiction speaks volumes.

“Any lingering doubt that the commission is ideologically captured by the trans movement should now be put firmly to bed.”

He added that the commission’s efforts to “shape public policy” lack any democratic mandate, and are “outrageous”, saying: “It is long past time that its sponsoring department – the Executive Office, jointly headed by Emma Little-Pengelly – called the commission to account.

“The health minister, who already has a worrying record on these matters, will also be held accountable for how he responds.”
