Letter: The Ulster-Scots achieved greatness second to none - we should celebrate being an Ulster-Scot every day
A letter from Stevan Patterson:
The recent comments by a nationalist politician describing a number of Ulster-Scots projects linked to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as “vanity projects” were deeply offensive.

It shows once again how little respect and tolerance some nationalists have for people from my ethnic group.
I am so proud of my Ulster-Scots identity. We as a people have excelled and achieved so much from every aspect of human endeavour, despite the many hardships faced over the generations.
Perhaps some Irish nationalists are secretly envious of us and that is why they like to attack the Ulster-Scot culture and identity in some kind of continuing culture war?
As Ulster-Scots we have what is often referred to as a siege mentality, which is quite understandable when for hundreds of years our neighbours have tried to ethnically cleanse us. Despite so many challenges and hate, we can still triumph – including by simply being in existence.
I believe God has a special place for the Ulster-Scots due to the suffering inflicted on us over many generations – and that is why, by God’s help, with a Bible in hand, the Ulster-Scots have achieved greatness second to none.
This year as we rightly celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, remember the USA was established as part of a vision for freedom and liberty by Ulster-Scots.
With such a proud legacy, it is fitting to celebrate being an Ulster-Scot, not just on the 4th of July this year, but every single day of the year.
