Letter: Unionism leadership needs to achieve, like Sinn Fein, to command any true respect from the unionist electorate

A letter from Nigel Stewart:

The Safeguarding the Union deal was unveiled in February. Then DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson it 'takes away the border within the UK'. Months later, leader Gavin Robinson acknowledged the continued existence of the Irish Sea borderplaceholder image

The collective leadership of unionism have failed the unionist electorate for decades.

Unlike Sein Féin, who have pocketed the abortion act, the Irish language act and the destruction of the RUC, I am a loss to find anything the weak and compliant unionist leadership has achieved - including the latest manifestation, Safeguarding the Union.

The catalogue of failings and weakness is so appalling that many of my fellow unionists have stopped voting for non-achievers who value photo calls and meaningless soundbites over delivery for the unionist agenda.

Gavin Robinson and Doug Beattie are very weak leaders who do not deserve the mantle of Carson or Craig.

They need to determine strategic objectives for unionism and, like Sein Fein, deliver them to command any true respect from the unionist electorate.

A continued failure to address the problem of the Parades Commission and the Irish language street naming provision in Belfast are among many issues that should be addressed and not ignored - their collective electorate are not stupid.
