Letter was right about large gatherings at GAA games

Dr Edward Cooke’s letter in Thursday’s edition of the News Letter (September 24) is so on the mark its unreal.

(The letter can be read here: ‘People need to know social distancing applies to everyone, including the GAA’)

In the Magherafelt/South Londonderry area, the gatherings at GAA grounds have been shocking. Most of the grounds are on the road edge, so is plain for everyone to see.

I have gone into local shops often and seen an individual standing in the queue kitted out in GAA gear and no mask on.

The mind boggles at the level of disregard for public safety.

A few days ago my neighbour and I witnessed a funeral complete with a GAA shoulder to shoulder guard of honour and marshalls parking cars for the few hundred people that attended.

I do despair for the oncoming wave of illness that we will see over the winter, with these blatant breaches of regulations witnessed.
