Today let us mark with pride the centenary of the creation of “our wee country”.

In her first century she has certainly made her mark in many fields - who can gainsay the legacy of such as Professor Frank Pantridge or Sir Martin Baker? Who can deny the achievements of George Best, Alex Higgins or Rory McIlroy? Who can dismiss the artistic talents of James Ellis or Sir Kenneth Brannagh? Who can discount the importance of Field Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke or Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery?

Today, as we take pride in our country and ourselves let us remind those who, churlishly and foolishly, pretend that she, and we, do not exist “wee Northern Ireland, she hasn’t gone away you know”.
