Minister Poots, who is also vying to become the next leader of the DUP, pulled out of a separate North South Ministerial Meeting with his Republic of Ireland counterpart, Charlie McConalogue, TD, two weeks ago.

SDLP MLA and Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, tweeted this morning that this was a "long standing" meeting that "once again couldn't go ahead because of Minister Edwin Poots .

Ms Mallon said "if this is a sign of things to come, it doesn't bode well".

"Powersharing requires leadership", she said.

A spokesman from DAERA said: “Due to significant pressures, the Minister was unable to attend.”

The decision not to attend is the latest act of a DUP strategy designed to undermine and ultimately remove the Northern Ireland Protocol.
