Van driver killed in '˜serious' single vehicle collision

A man in his 40s in has been killed in a serious single vehicle road traffic collision in south Armagh early this morning.

A PSNI spokesman said the man who died was the driver of a van who was involved in a collision on the New Road at its junction with Legmoylan Road.

He said the collision was reported to police shortly after 5.40am.

Inspector Lorraine Dobson is appealing for anyone who was travelling on the New Road this morning and who witnessed the collision to contact local police in Newtownhamilton or the Collision Investigation Unit in Sprucefield on the non-emergency number 101.

The road still remained closed after 2pm today.

Earlier Sinn Fein Councillor Terry Hearty from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council said “this is not the first (fatal accident) in this area”.

“I want to extend my condolences to his family at this time.” he added.

A spokesman from the Ambulance Service said: “We received a call this morning at 5.40am and we sent one crew out to it. No one was taken from the scene.”
