Armagh will not be '˜one season wonders'

Last season Armagh struck a rich vein of form and completed an unprecedented treble of the Ulster Bank Section Two title, Goldblatt McGuigan Junior Cup and Lagan Valley Steels Twenty20 Shield.

One of the most scenic settings in the NCU, The Mall, will once again host Section One cricket in 2016 and certainly the club has been taking steps during the winter to ensure that 2015 was no “one season wonder.”

Last season’s blend of youth and experience are all available again and that talented pool has been added to by the acquisition of Neil Gelston from Drumaness; plus for the first time in many years a professional; Indrajeet Kamtekar.

Neither player needs any introduction with Kamtekar, making the transition from Premier League Carrickfergus and Gelston one of the most prolific run scorers outside the top section in recent seasons; both having the added advantage of being slow bowlers thrown into the mix.

Matthew Steenson will once again lead the side and he is early looking forward to the year ahead.

“Neil has been training with us over the winter and has fitted in well. Kami has just arrived and I am looking forward not just to his contributions with bat and ball but also for his advice with the step up.

The initial target will be to consolidate and look for a mid table spot.”

So who are the contenders for the title? It will be interesting to see how Ballymena fare after relegation. Undoubtedly Muckamore will look to put an indifferent 2015 behind them and Bangor have also made a marquee signing in the shape of Taimur Khan.

As always Downpatrick and Woodvale will be in the mix if they play well.
