Mark McAllister has described Portadown's capture of Philip Lowry on a short-term deal as one which can give 'players and fans a lift'.

McAllister shared a dressing room with Lowry for around five seasons as a Linfield team-mate and is confident the former Derry City ace can strengthen the Ports.

“He is a quality signing that will give the players and fans a lift,” said McAllister. “He is the best goal-scoring midfielder I have played with and has that knack of getting into the right place at the right time.

“He scored probably 15 goals a season at Linfield from open play but works really hard for the team as well and is just a brilliant addition.

“Phil is a great professional who trains well and I basically could not praise him enough.”

It is understood the player, who is based in England due to work commitments, will travel back to Northern Ireland for matchdays.

Lowry’s arrival has been confirmed just three days following the exit of striker Darren Murray to Cliftonville.

The official Portadown FC website described manager Ronnie McFall’s stance on further additions in the January transfer window as “unlikely”.

“Darren is a great player and we wish him all the best with Cliftonville, expect against Portadown,” said McAllister. “However, signing Philip sends out a great message and will, hopefully, allow us to push on.”
