Irish League club celebrate first senior trophy triumph as manager enjoys 'priceless' memories

Annagh United celebrated the club’s maiden senior trophy triumph after beating Rathfriland Rangers 2-0 in the Mid-Ulster Cup final on Wednesday evening.

Ciaran McGurgan’s side, who are also aiming to seal Premiership promotion this term, ran out victors at Stangmore Park thanks to goals from Jude Johnson and James Convie.

Glentoran loanee Johnston put Annagh ahead after 35 minutes before Convie’s second half strike ensured victory in Co Tyrone.

The Mid-Ulster Cup was founded in 1887 with Glenavon the competition’s most successful team having collected 22 titles while Portadown have lifted it on 19 occasions.

Annagh had previously been beaten in three finals – 2006/07, 2013/14 and 2021/22 – but have now finally got their hands on the trophy.

The Co Armagh club celebrated Premier Intermediate League title glory during the 2019/20 season, sitting three points ahead of Portstewart when the campaign was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a post on social media, McGurgan captioned “priceless” alongside a photo of his father – and founding member – Brian and club stalwart Alan Flavelle carrying the Mid-Ulster Cup.

Jonathan Buckley MLA was amongst those who passed on their congratulations, posting: “Massive congratulations to Annagh United F.C on winning the Mid Ulster Cup last night - the club's first senior trophy! Well done to all players, coaching staff and everyone involved in the club on this very special moment.”

Annagh will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Queen’s University in the Championship.

McGurgan’s side currently sit three points behind leaders Limavady United having played one match less at this stage as they look to make their Premiership dream a reality after a number of near play-off misses.

Annagh were beaten 8-3 on aggregate by Carrick Rangers last term as the Taylors Avenue outfit preserved top-flight status.
