Northern Ireland star outlines Premier League goal after £5million deadline day move to Stoke City

Northern Ireland’s Justin Devenny has outlined his desire to help new club Stoke City seal a Premier League return after completing a deadline day move from Crystal Palace.

Devenny had been linked with interest from Celtic before opting to link up with international team-mate Ethan Galbraith at Stoke, signing a four-year contract.

The 22-year-old enjoyed significant silverware success with Palace – he was an unused substitute in their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in 2025 and scored the decisive penalty in a shoot-out Community Shield success against Liverpool at Wembley a matter of months later.

Palace reigned supreme in last season’s Conference League with Devenny making six appearances during their run to the title.

Scotland-born Devenny hadn’t featured in Palace’s Premier League matchday squads at the start of this season and has now made a switch to Stoke in a deal reportedly worth around £5million.

It was a big summer window for Northern Ireland’s top talent with Shea Charles breaking the transfer fee record with his move to Fulham from Southampton while younger brother Pierce joined Manchester City before being sent on loan to Queens Park Rangers.

Galbraith made an eight-figure switch to Stoke from Swansea City and scored the winner in Tuesday’s 1-0 league win over Norwich City.

Having experienced playing in the Premier League, Devenny is determined to help Stoke fulfil their own top flight ambitions.

“A big part of the reason for me joining is that the ambitions of the Club match mine, and that’s to ultimately get back into the Premier League,” he said on the club’s website. “That’s the goal.

"It’s what we want and it’s what the fans want as well. With the size of the Club, that’s what we need to aim to be.

“Football for me is about doing all sides of the game, whether that’s defending and tackling, carrying the ball or starting and joining attacks.

“I’ll provide plenty of energy and hard work and want to be showing quality by contributing with goals and assists as well.

“I’m really excited to join the Club, to meet the fans and start putting all of that into action, to the best level I can, in a Stoke City shirt.”

Devenny has developed into an important player for Northern Ireland, featuring in five of six World Cup qualifying group matches last year and started in a play-off semi-final loss to Italy in March.

“Justin is a player who has made 60 appearances during the past two seasons in and around the Premier League and European football, as well as representing his national team,” said Jon Walters, Stoke’s Sporting Director. “That experience, combined with the quality he has shown at that level and the tenacious attitude he brings to his game, gives us confidence that he has the attributes to positively contribute to what we’re building.

“He also gives us versatility and further competition within the squad, which was important to us as we looked to strengthen over the summer.

“With the 10 new signings we have made over the window, we feel we have added both quality and depth across the squad.

"We believe we now have a group capable of having a successful season, but we know the relentless hard work must continue throughout the Club if we are going to achieve what we want to.”
