Rory Best views 'mature character' as important part of Ulster Rugby future after signing contract extension
Ulster Rugby’s General Manager Rory Best views Tom Stewart as “an important player for both Ulster and Ireland in the years ahead” after signing a contract extension to 2028.
Stewart, who made his Ireland debut against Italy in 2023 and has earned five international caps, is a former Belfast Royal Academy pupil and has progressed through Ulster’s ranks.

The hooker played his first match for the province in December 2021 and has developed into a crucial player for Ulster, making 65 appearances to date.
Stewart has made a big impact for Richie Murphy’s side in an impressive start to the current campaign – Ulster currently sit third in the United Rugby Championship and head into Saturday’s Challenge Cup showdown with Stade Francais capable of topping Group Three.
The 25-year-old captained an Ireland XV squad during November’s trip to Spain and Best believes Stewart has a bright future.
“We are delighted that Tom has committed his future with us for the next two seasons,” he said. “Tom has been benefitting from consistent minutes and fitness this season and it’s clear that his ball- carrying ability and threat around the maul are key weapons for us going forward.
"He is a mature character for his age and certainly has leadership qualities that will continue to grow in the years ahead. We see him as an important player for both Ulster and Ireland in the years ahead.”
Stewart is excited for the future after penning a new contract and wants to play his part in delivering success at Ulster.
“Ulster Rugby is my home club and the team I always grew up wanting to play for,” he said. “I’m honoured to sign on for a further two seasons, and I’m fully focused on continuing to improve my game to help the team move forward.
"I’m hugely ambitious about what we can achieve as a club in the future and what we continue to push for this season.”
Stewart’s new contract comes one day after both Rob Herring and Sam Crean signed extensions.
Herring, who is Ulster’s record appearance holder, will remain with the club until 2027, while prop Crean will be sticking around until 2028 after joining from Saracens last summer.
“We are very pleased to announce that Rob and Sam will remain Ulstermen for the future,” said Best. “Rob is such a key member of the dressing room with his leadership, experience and his consistent ability.
“Rob makes others around him better and we are delighted to be extending his time here and know that he will be extending his appearance record into unknown territory!
“Sam has impressed the coaching staff with his attitude and his performances this season. He adds vital competition at loosehead, and we believe he is progressing well in his development as a front row forward.”
