A new article published by Yappily is encouraging dog guardians to think carefully before exercising their dogs during warm weather, highlighting expert advice and research on heat-related illness in dogs.

The article, titled "How Hot Is Too Hot To Walk A Dog?", explores the risks associated with hot weather and explains why heatstroke can develop during everyday activities such as walking, playing and exercising outdoors.

It also highlights research from the Royal Veterinary College, which found that around three-quarters of canine heatstroke cases were linked to exercise.

As part of the article, veterinary surgeon Dr Sophie Bell BVMS MRCVS shared advice for dog guardians on recognising and preventing heat-related illness.

"Keeping your dog safe in the hot weather relies on you," said Dr Bell.

She explained that elderly dogs, brachycephalic breeds and dogs with underlying health conditions may require particular care during warm weather and warned that temperatures above 19°C can be extremely dangerous for some higher-risk dogs.

Dr Bell advises guardians to provide plenty of cold drinking water and consider cooling aids such as cool mats and fans to help dogs stay comfortable.

The article also explains how to recognise early signs of heat-related illness, including heavy panting, red gums and changes in appearance as dogs attempt to regulate their body temperature.

Dr Bell noted that veterinary advice on cooling dogs has changed in recent years.

"We use cold water repeatedly on their body and never cover them with a cold wet towel," she said. "We must always actively cool our dog before travelling to the vet."

The Yappily article includes practical advice on keeping dogs safe during warm weather, information about which dogs may be at greater risk and guidance on what to do if heatstroke is suspected.
