The News Letter can reveal the fastest-growing region of Northern Ireland by far in the past 10 years.

It is Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC).

Far more homes of all types have been completed there in the past 10 years than in any other council area: 9,237.

The News Letter came across the figures from the Department of Finance while researching a story about the shortage of social homes in NI.

The figures cover “new dwelling completions”, both private and social, from April 2016 until April 2026.

After ABC, the area with the next-highest number of new-builds has been Lisburn and Castlereagh: 6,928.

And that is not down to these areas having the biggest populations to begin with; ABC’s population is about 223,000, and Lisburn and Castlereagh’s is 152,000.

Meanwhile in Belfast, which has 345,000 residents – making it by far the biggest council area by population – only 6,651 homes were built in total in the last decade.

Here are the figures for everywhere else:

Ards and North Down: 6,194

Antrim and Newtownabbey: 6,192

Newry Mourne and Down: 6,178

Mid Ulster: 6,016

Derry City and Strabane: 5,491

Causeway Coast and Glens: 5,284

Mid and East Antrim: 4,641

Fermanagh and Omagh: 3,476
