NI coronavirus trend shows numbers of fatalities are flatlining as one new death recorded in Province

Northern Ireland recorded a single Covid-19 related death today, as Province-wide data from the Department of Health shows the trend of few-to-none fatalities is continuing.

Northern Ireland experienced its first day with no fatalities recorded on June 4.

There was one death on June 5, and none at all on June 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

There were two on June 11, followed by one (June 12), one (June 13), zero (June 14), and zero (June 15).

The total numbers of deaths in Northern Ireland now stands at 542.

The numbers have been coming down steadily since mid-to-late April, when the virus was at its peak.

Overwhelmingly, the deaths remain concentrated in Belfast, which has recorded 161 fatalities to date.

That is followed by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (59), and Antrim and Newtownabbey (57).

The least affected council area is Fermanagh and Omagh District, with 10 fatalities.

In all, 8,454 people in the Province have tested positive for Covid-19.

Deaths are highly-concentrated among older people; 361 of the 542 fatalities were aged 80 or over, and another 156 were aged 60 to 79.

Only 24 people aged under 60 have died.

In all, 320 people have died in hospital, 186 have died in care homes, and the remainder either died “in the community” or in an unknown setting.

At a UK-wide level, the latest government data shows the death toll increased by 233 to 41,969 fatalities who had positive coronavirus tests.

Worldwide, Johns Hopkins medical university in Baltimore, USA, shows there were just under 438,000 deaths at time of writing.

The worst five countries for deaths were: USA (116,250), Brazil (43,959), followed by the UK, Italy and France.
