Carnfunnock Country Park reopened after terror hide find

The security alert at Carnfunnock Country Park, near Larne has ended and the Park has been re-opened, a PSNI spokesman has said.

During the operation a number of items were taken away for forensic examination.

Earlier it emerged that police had uncovered a significant terrorist hide containing bomb making components and explosives.

The haul was discovered after a member of the public reported a suspicious object to police on Saturday afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Gillian Kearney said: “I would like to thank members of the public for their patience during this prolonged operation and would ask them to remain vigilant wherever they are and whatever they are doing.

“I would also appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact Detectives on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
