They have not given an age for the woman, except to say she is in her 20s (when suspects are charged in Northern Ireland the PSNI generally give their age – if not earlier, at arrest stage).

Gardai said that she had been driving a vehicle which was stopped at Carrickmacross, about six miles from the Co Armagh border, on Wednesday.

A bomb was found on board.

Irish police had said she was detained “pursuant to Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 (as amended)”.

In an update this evening, they said: “Gardaí continue to investigate all the circumstances surrounding a vehicle that was stopped travelling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

"The female (aged in her 20s) who was arrested has since been charged in relation to this investigation.

"The female is due to appear before a special sitting of Trim District Court this evening, Friday July 24, 2026 at 7pm.

"The male (aged in his 40s) arrested in connection with the investigation, remains detained pursuant to Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 (as amended), at a Garda station in the Dublin region.

"Investigations ongoing.”
