Hugh and Irene, of Whitehead Home and Hardware, thanked the local community for its loyalty and support, saying it was the familiar faces, conversations and friendships they would miss most.

The shop, which traced its roots back to 1958 and has changed hands over the years, officially closed its doors last week, bringing to an end more than six decades of serving the seaside town.

In a message posted on social media, the couple said: “As many of you will know, our hardware shop has now officially closed its doors for business.

“We will be spending the rest of this week emptying out the shop, but our doors will still be open for anyone who would need to purchase anything thats still in shop or would like to call in, say hello or have one last chat.

“We would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. Whether you've been a regular customer, popped in for the odd few bits, or simply stopped by for a chat, we have truly appreciated every single one of you.

“It's not just the custom we will miss, but the familiar faces, the laughs, the stories and the friendships made along the way.

“Your kindness, loyalty and support over the years have meant more to us than words can say.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything. It's the end of an era, but we leave with many lovely memories. Thank you all once again.”

In a later message, Hugh reflected on the personal support the couple had received, particularly during Irene's illness.

He said customers who had called into the shop to offer their best wishes and support had shown that they were regarded as “more than just shopkeepers in a small town, but as friends to all of you”.

He said the couple had always hoped the shop would be somewhere people could call in for a chat, whether about something important or “nothing in particular”.

He added: “The pressures of life that people face, along with the experiences we all go through, can sometimes make problems seem unbearable. Sometimes, a friendly face, a conversation or a smile can make all the difference.

“If you came into the shop feeling low and left with a smile, then it has all been worthwhile to us over the years. So, with this, we would like to say thank you.

“You have all made our presence in Whitehead a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. For us, we are just sorry it had to end.”

The closure prompted a wave of tributes from customers, many of whom described the business as an important part of the community.

One customer praised Hugh's advice, helpfulness and good humour, others said the store had been “more than just a hardware shop”, while another described it as “such an important wee community hub”.

Others recalled the practical help they had received, alongside the friendly conversations and laughter that made the shop a special place.

Hugh and Irene said they were sorry to see the business come to an end but urged people to continue supporting Whitehead's other businesses.

They added: “We wish all of you the very best going forward, and we look forward to meeting up with you in the town in the future.

“Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your kindness, friendship, loyalty and support over the years.”
