Investigation underway after ammo found in NI estate

A security alert in the New Lodge area of north Belfast has ended with the discovery of ammunition.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: Police and ATO examined a number of suspicious objects, which were located in the area this afternoon (Thursday 18th February), and have declared them to be a number of rounds of ammunition. All the items have been removed for further forensic examination.

Sinn Fein councillor JJ Magee said: “There is no doubt that the removal of this ammunition has helped to save lives.

“There is no place for guns on our streets.

“Those behind it have little to offer and do not have the backing of the local community.”

He added: “Those responsible should get off the backs of the community.”
