Man suspected of indecent exposure near school and following woman arrested
Police have arrested a man after two incidents in the same city in as many days – one of them involving suspected indecent exposure near a school.
Both incidents happened in Londonderry, one yesterday and one today.
According to police, at around 3.30pm to 3.40pm on Tuesday a man indecently exposed himself near a school in the Culmore Road area of the city.
Shortly after 1pm today, a woman walking on Great James Street close to the heart of the city was followed by a man she didn’t know. When reporting it to the PSNI a short time later, she said he’d walked a distance behind her; although she woman was able to make her way to safety, she was left distressed by the incident.
Police patrols were conducted within the Great James Street area and nearby streets, but there were no further sightings of the man.
The suspect in the first case is described as a black male, approximately six feet tall aged between 30 and 40 years old, wearing a blue coat, blue chino-type trousers and dark-coloured shoes, with a tight short haircut and an athletic build. In the second case, the victim described the man following her as having a dark skin tone, wearing a black top and grey bottoms
Police have now arrested a 35-year-old man for indecent exposure, but believe the two cases may be linked.
Said PSNI Inspector Robb: “We take reports of this nature incredibly seriously and officers will be on patrol to provide reassurance. We urge anyone with information to please report it to us so we can investigate fully.”
The arrested man remains in custody at this time. Police are appealing for witnesses and information in relation to both incidents.
With Tuesday’s incident, say police, the Culmore Road area would have been busy given the time of day. Officers are appeal for witnesses or anyone out walking, or travelling through the area and who may have relevant dash cam footage, to contact them.
Police would also like to hear from witnesses to the Great James Street incident, including anyone who saw a man matching the description in the area at the time. They'd also like to hear from anyone who may have captured any kind of recorded footage.
