Elderly man dies following house fire

A man in his 80's has died following a fire at a house on the Lissan Road in Cookstown.

Police received a report of a fire at a house shortly before 9.50am this morning, Tuesday 15 November.

A PSNI spokesman said emergency services attended but “unfortunately the man was found deceased at the scene”.

An investigation into the cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious, is now under way.

UUP Councillor for the area Trevor Wilson extended “his deepest sympathies to his family”.

He said the pensioner’s death had “shocked everyone in the area”.

It is understood the pensioner had moved to Cookstown from Belfast in recent years.
