A man has died in a house fire.

The victim is aged 48.

The fire was at a house in Waring Street, in the Harryville district of central Ballymena, today.

The PSNI said: “Police received a report of the fire shortly before 9.45am on Friday morning, and attended alongside colleagues from other emergency services but, sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing, however, at this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Two fire engines from Ballymena Fire Station attended the incident.

The fire brigade said its “thoughts and sympathies” are with the man’s family.

The death had been preceded by four others in the run-up to Christmas.

On December 12 a man in his 20s died in a fire in north Belfast, a woman in her 50s died in Bangor, and a woman in her 40s died in Dunmurry, south-west Belfast.

Then on December 14, a woman in her 90s died in a blaze in Lisburn.
