Police in Ireland are investigating an attempted hack of their own computer systems.

The Garda said no data had been compromised by the malware.

It said the incident had not affected its Pulse database that stores information on criminal investigations or the publicly accessible Garda website.

The type of malware involved is referred to as “zero day” – meaning that it was not previously known about.

The Garda said heightened security procedures were triggered after the detection of the malware on Thursday and steps were taken to limit its impact.

A spokesman for An Garda Siochana said: “Working with security experts the threat was identified and an appropriate solution was implemented across all Garda Siochana ICT systems.

“An Garda Siochana are continuing our investigation into the incident. The computer crime unit at the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation are investigating the source of this malware.”
