A police spokesperson said: “A post mortem will be carried out. The cause of death is ‘unexplained’ at this time”.

Former paramilitary leader Johnny Adair told the Irish News that the family were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and were awaiting further information on the cause of death.

“I can’t really say much at the minute because we just don’t know what happened until we hear back from the police,” he said.

When he was 18 and still living in Northern Ireland, Jonathan Adair was shot in both legs in the loyalist lower Shankill area of west Belfast.

The family later left Northern Ireland amid a loyalist feud.
