Renewed tensions over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands is a worrying development.

The issue is making headlines again after Argentinian president Javier Milei gave an incendiary national address on Thursday night.

Mr Milei reiterated his country’s claim on the islands, and said Argentina needed to take them back.

His words were as provocative as they were straightforward.

“The Falklands are our future – we need to recover these islands which are nationally relevant. There is no other path forward,” he said.

In a signal that oil – rather than purely nationalistic fervour – could be a significant factor behind Mr Milei's outburst, the Argentinian president pledged to introduce sanctions against any companies working on oil production in the area.

The Sea Lion oilfield, off the shores of the Falklands and owned by an Israeli and a British firm, with production expected to begin in 2028, is thought to contain up to 1.7 billion barrels of oil, far eclipsing the amount remaining in UK waters.

Mr Milei will have felt emboldened to make his Falklands comments thanks to his apparent closeness to the Trump administration, and there has been speculation that Washington wants some involvement in Falkland Islands’ oil production.

The whole issue presents a considerable challenge Andy Burnham’s Labour government. Yesterday, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband vowed that the UK’s position on the Falklands was "unwavering", adding: “The islands are British and will remain so because that is the overwhelming position of the islanders.”

Words and actions must leave the Argentinians in no doubt about the UK’s firm resolve on the matter, so that the clear wishes of the islanders are maintained, and the legacy of the 255 British service deaths in the 1982 war is honoured.
