As ex RUC officers, we know all about checking under our cars Gerry Kelly

Gerry Kelly convicted bomber, escapee from the Maze, On The Run for a number of years, Sinn Fein/IRA member has been warned by the PSNI that a threat has been made against him and all members of Sinn Fein by the new IRA.

Gerry Kelly, pictured at Policing Board, was quick on the radio to say that he received a call from a ‘top PSNI officer’, maybe a person who Gerry Kelly’s former associates in the IRA may have at one time targeted when he was involved in the terrorist IRA.

Kelly went on to say that he checked under his car and felt for his family at this time. As an RUC officer with a young family in the dark days I wonder does he and PIRA members understand how we felt? Every day we had to watch what we did and where we went because of Kelly and his then IRA counterparts.

We still continue to do this every day.

I am retired now 11 years and have never received any warning from the PSNI about a threat to retired officers. But they appear to be quick to tell ex-IRA members of threats.

How times have changed.
