Whence he proceeded, not from whence

A letter from Dr John Kerr:

In his excellent article about James Bourchier (‘Well-bred Old Portoran who lives on as a national hero in Bulgaria’, January 4), Gordon Lucy states that Bourchier “boarded at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, from whence he proceeded to Trinity College, Dublin”.

The word “from” is superfluous.

It is akin to stating that “he proceeded on to Trinity College, Dublin before returning back to Enniskillen”.
