Funeral arrangements for popular NI photographer Dermot McGeown

Tributes have flooded social media following the death of popular NI photographer Dermot McGeown.

Dermot, who worked as a freelance photographer for newspapers such as the Lurgan Mail and the Lurgan and Portadown Examiner, passed away on Tuesday night at the Cancer Centre in Belfast City Hospital.

A popular figure in the Lurgan area, Dermot was regularly out at weekends and special events taking photos of football matches and birthday parties.

He often was seen at the side of GAA, soccer and rugby pitches as he was highly regarded as an action photographer.

He snapped thousands of school and graduation photos marking important moments in the lives of the local residents.

Acres of photographs are archived in news pages as he captured generations of people and thousands of events throughout decades.

He took many photos of charitable events for free and was well known for his generosity of time and kindness.

Father of Emma, Dermot’s funeral will take place on Saturday at St Peter’s Church in Lurgan at 11am.

Since his death, many clubs, organisations and individuals have paid tribute to Mr McGeown.

His club St Peter’s GAA in Lurgan said: “The Committees and members of St. Peter’s Club would like to express our sadness on the passing of our esteemed member and former player Dermot Mc Geown. We send our condolences to his daughter Emma and all of his family circle. Dermy was a great character and excellent player, he was always there to capture many memorable photos through the years. Nothing was ever a problem when asked by the club. “Another great clubman we will certainly miss.

“This piece was written just before the 1967 Junior Championship final and one of the many memories he left us. ‘Dermot McGeown - one of the up-and-coming stars who was tutored by Harry Hoy in St Paul’s School. This jinking right-half forward can spell danger and get the scores’. May he rest in peace.”

Oxford Sunnyside FC said: “Everyone at Oxford Sunnyside would like to send their condolences to the family and friends of former player and talented local photographer Dermot McGeown.”

He worked for many years for the Lurgan Mail as a valued and talented freelance photographer and will be sadly missed by those that worked with him.

Sean Treacys Hurling Club Lurgan said: “On behalf of everyone at Sean Treacy’s we send our condolences to the family of Dermy McGeown who passed away last night. Dermy, a local photographer who was regularly seen at the side of of our pitch and many others. He never refused us when we asked him to photograph an event. Such a gentleman. Rest in Peace Dermy.”

Train To BSmart Juniors said: “Train 2B Smart would like to extend our sincere condolences to the McGeown family on the passing of Dermot McGeown. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this difficult time.”

Dermot McGeown was a devoted father to Emma and a loving brother of Vincent, Monica (McCorry), Vera (Kelly) and the late Nora (McConville), Laurence, Maurice and Molly (McDonald).

His funeral will be from his late home, 4 Island View, Kinnego, BT67 9JE on Saturday to arrive at St. Peter’s Church for 11.00 am Requiem Mass. Burial afterwards in St. Colman’s Cemetery.
