Anti-immigration demo and trade union-backed counter-protest planned for Coleraine

An anti-immigration protest is scheduled to take place in Coleraine on Saturday, where it will be met with a counter protest supported by the Province's largest trade union.

Both have been registered with the Parades Commission, which is still mulling over whether to impose conditions at time of writing.

The anti-immigration rally is organised by a group called Our Northern Ireland Voice, which describes itself as "a community dedicated to protecting, preserving, and celebrating the culture, traditions, and heritage that make Northern Ireland unique".

It is billed as the group's launch event (though it has organised previous gatherings).

The group states this will be "a day that will be etched into the history of Coleraine and Northern Ireland, whether people like it or not".

It will assemble at 2pm at The Diamond for addresses by right-wing speakers and a "Gospel message", before embarking on a march at 3.45pm through the town, ending at the car park behind the train station at 4.30pm.

The 11/1 Parades Commission form lists 2,500 expected attendees (11/1 figures are often inaccurate).

Opposing it is a rally by the Causeway Trade Union Council, with an estimate of 100 attendees given in the 11/1 form.

Among those joining in the latter will be members of NIPSA, which describes it as a gathering against "the far right for peace and inclusion".

The counter-protest will start from 2pm at Coleraine Town Hall - also in the Diamond in the town centre.

NIPSA (which has around 47,000 members) has said: "As a result of cuts to services, people are being left without the basics - secure housing, stable jobs and properly funded public services.

"Communities are under pressure and they need support, not division.

"When families can’t access the housing, healthcare or services they need, frustration grows.

"The answer is investment, fairness and strong public services - not turning communities against one another."
