Antrim and Newtownabbey councillors have welcomed progress on the new Ballyclare relief road.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s Operations Committee on Tuesday evening, Ballyclare DUP Councillor Jeannie Archibald said that she was “happy to see contractors on site this week”.

“It is really good to see,” she commented.

She joked that the new relief road in the Co Antrim town has been “talked about longer” than she has been alive.

Seconding a water connection request at the town cemetery, party colleague Alderman Mandy Girvan said: “I am glad to see it. This is moving forward at a great pace.”

Lotus Homes has committed to the £3.6m investment to build the first phase of the relief road running from Templepatrick Road to Doagh Road.

The infrastructure is expected to take a year to complete.

Lotus Homes will also bring 250 new high-end properties to Ballyclare. A large parkland is also planned.

South Antrim MP Paul Girvan explained recently that Lotus Homes would be starting in April and expected to take a year to build the infrastructure.

“Planning restrictions mean that none of the houses can be sold until the road is complete,” he said.
