Sinn Fein's Declan Kearney denounces attack on Iran as 'mindless armed aggression'

Sinn Fein’s national chairman has condemned the “escalation of armed aggression by the US and Israel with the support of Britain” against Iran.

His condemnation adds to that of First Minister Michelle O’Neill, who had earlier called the war “reckless death and destruction”.

It comes as Donald Trump declares that the attack could last four to five weeks.

South Antrim MLA Mr Kearney said it “reflects a dangerous disregard for international law, multilateralism and peace”.

He said: “Michelle O’Neill’s decision not to attend British government ‘confidential security’ briefings demonstrates political leadership. It is the correct decision.

"We will not be in any way complicit with Britain’s involvement with this mindless war.

"The spectre of the catastrophic wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya once again looms large.

“We have previously witnessed devastation caused when western powers arrogantly believe they know better than the people of the Middle East, leaving behind death, destruction and instability.”

Last month, Mr Kearney had paid tribute to “our comrade” Bik McFarlane at an event in Londonderry.

McFarlane was given five life sentences for killing five random Protestants in a gun and bomb attack. He died in February 2025.

"Great to see so many of his friends and comrades from the H Blocks and Armagh in attendance,” said Mr Kearney of that event.
