Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson said he was “shocked” at the news that Mr Girvan had been found in his home.

“I do know the individual as he did work at my home. I have known him for a lifetime and to be honest I am quite shocked about it all.”

Mr Dickson said Mr Girvan had been “a local builder and then later an odd-job man doing house repairs”.

“He was the sort of man who always had a trailer behind his car,” he added.

“I have known him a lifetime, I know his wife, daughters, they went to our church, but I haven’t seen them for some time I suppose,” he said.

“Eddie was in the BB with me. This is terribly sad because Eddie was well known in the community and was someone everyone knew and liked.”

He appealed for anyone with information about what happened to contact the PSNI.

East Antrim DUP MLA Gordon Lyons said he was shocked and saddened by the man’s death.

He said: “My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Mr Lyons encouraged anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
