Cancellations and six-hour delays at Belfast airports after air chaos supposedly over

Cancellations and delays of up to six hours hit flights in Northern Ireland today, after claims disruption seen this week was finally over.

At Belfast City Airport, a flight from Glasgow due to touch down shortly before noon was reading as having a delay of just under six hours, while one from Edinburgh during the afternoon was over two hours late.

Meanwhile a Heathrow plane this evening was cancelled, and several flights to a range of UK airports over the course of the day from multiple airlines suffered setbacks ranging from a few minutes to more than an hour.

It was a broadly similar story at Belfast International Airport, where every airline due to take off or touch down showed delays of anywhere from a few minutes to one and a half hours. Many flights over the course of the afternoon were affected, and mainly though not exclusively to other UK airports – though at the time of publication, none were cancelled.

Each facility stayed tight-lipped over the issue, however; representatives of both Belfast City and Belfast International refused to comment on today’s delays and cancellations, stating that enquiries should instead be directed to each individual airline.

A technical issue at National Air Traffic Services on Tuesday caused more than 2,000 flights arriving or departing the UK to be cancelled.

Disruption continued on Wednesday as airlines dealt with knock-on impacts, but several major airports in England today said operations were set to continue as normal.

British Airways, which previously said the fault had forced it to cancel almost 550 flights impacting more than 85,000 passengers, said it expected to “operate a normal schedule” today.
