Pothole repair fund planned after January's wind, snow and rain took chunks out of Northern Irish roads

A pothole repair fund is planned after January’s bad weather battered Northern Irish roads.

Wind, snow and unusually large amounts of rain contributed to the roads taking a walloping, with Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins now saying that she hopes to soon announce a funding boost to fix up the network.

That’s on top of a £30m package she unveiled before Christmas, stating she’s taking “the impact the recent storm and cold weather has had across the road network” very seriously.

“Changing weather patterns are bringing heavier rainfall and an increase in flooding and flood risk,” she said. “In January alone we have seen the extremes – snow, record rainfall and last week Storm Chandra.

“My department is committed to raising the standard of maintenance across the network. I hope to announce the detail of a further package of measures in the coming days.”
