Two tourists die in '˜drowning accident' on river Shannon

Two holidaymakers have died in an apparent drowning accident on the River Shannon.

The couple, who lived in Germany and were aged in their 30s, were recovered from the water at Carrick on Shannon.

They had been reported missing on Friday morning. The couple had hired a cruiser earlier in the week.

The body of the man was located in the river close to the boat at 2pm. The woman’s body was recovered in the water later in the afternoon.

The bodies are to be removed to Sligo University Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out on Monday.

Gardai said at this stage the deaths are being treated as accidental.
