Will Grigg's on fire as chant shoots to top of music charts

We may not have the most illustrious team going to the Euro 2016 finals but Northern Ireland fans have staked a claim for the most catchy song - and a chart topping one at that.

But the Green and White Army can’t take all the credit as the ‘Will Grigg’s on Fire’ anthem originated at the striker’s home club of Wigan.

The song - an adapted version of Gala’s 90s hit Freed from Desire - has captured the imagination of supporters across the country and a wave of downloads has pushed it towards the iTunes top 10.

The unlikely hit is the brainchild of Wigan supporter Sean Kennedy who came up with his novel version in honour of the Latics top scorer and instant Northern Ireland hero Grigg.

It has been recorded by London-based DJ duo Blonde but released under the name DJ Kenno in recognition of Kennedy’s contribution.

Proceeds from the song will go to Joseph’s Goal, a Wigan-based charity named after seven-year-old Latics fan Joseph Kendrick who suffers from rare genetic disorder Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia.

Kennedy, 26, is pleased the song, which was 11th in the chart at 4pm yesterday - not far behind Beyonce and Rihanna - is helping a good cause.

“It’s brilliant, people are singing it all over the place and we’re getting really positive feedback from it as well,” he told Press Association Sport.

Wigan’s top scorer came off the bench against Belarus last Friday to bag his first international goal.

Windsor Park erupted with the internet sensation chant when Grigg hit the back of the net from 12 yards out.

The song has been dubbed over the top of clips from several mainstream television shows such as The Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons, giving the impression that the characters are singing the chant themselves.
