The former Kilmarnock boss took over the Brandywell hotseat on a two year deal on November 2015 and has guided the club to European qualification in his first season in charge.

The Candy Stripes can secure a third place finish to cap a remarkable campaign tonight should they defeat Sligo Rovers in the final home match of the season at Brandywell Stadium. (K.O. 7.45).

Shiels claims he isn’t content with finishing third and wants to close the gap on the top two and bring titles back to Foyleside.

“Finishing third would be great but we can’t be happy with that,” he insisted. “We don’t want to have that mindset about the club; that third is an achievement. Third is not an achievement for me! Until we start winning trophies and getting those days back to this great club - that’s when I will be more content.”

He’s already building for the future and is hoping to get the bulk of his current squad signed up for next season’s League of Ireland campaign and obviously has the full backing of the club’s Chairman and Board of Directors who offered him an extension to his two year deal this week as a reward for his achievement.
